Does Muscle Mass Affect Running Times in Male Long-distance Master Runners? It is generally assuming that older runners such as master runners (over 35 years old) the age-related degradation of muscle mass adversely affects the endurance performance. At half-marathon, marathon and 100km runners, we examined the relationship between muscle mass, body fat and competition time. If the influence of muscle mass, body fat and training were examined for maturities in a multivariance analysis, the body fat for half marathon, marathon and 100 km was a crucial variable. For half marathon and marathon, the running speed in training was crucial, for 100 km the weekly running kilometers.
It turned out that body fat and training, but not muscle mass, correlate with mileage at master runs. The whole article can be found under https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmc3525821/
