Participation and performance trends in 100-km ultra-marathons worldwide It is well known that the East African runners dominate the longer running routes to the marathon.Previously, it has not been studied which runners dominate on the ultrasides such as the 100km. We examined the maturities and nationalities of 112'283 runners from 102 countries between 1998 and 2011.Most finishers came from Europe, especially from France. In the period examined, the number of finishers from Japan, Germany, Italy, Poland and the US increased exponentially. For women, the runners from Canada were slower and the athletes from Italy faster over the years. For men, runners from Belgium, Canada and Japan were slower.

The fastest maturities were achieved by Japanese, and in men like women. All numbers can be found under https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24015856/
